Late Summer 2014 Favorites

Natural Beauty Favorites from September 2014

Late Summer 2014 Favorites

Hi There! I hope you are doing well! Here is an overview of my Natural Beauty Favorites from September 2014. I bought all these products myself. Retail prices are listed in USD.

1. Lily Lolo Silk Finishing Powder
Some powders make my face look flat and “made-up” but this one provides great staying powder while providing a slightly dewy finish. I use this powder daily to set my foundation, BB cream and even mineral foundations. A light application of this sheer pale peachy pink powder sets my makeup beautifully and helps it last all day. The packaging is cute and functional (includes a sifter to control spillage and how much gets dispensed). I pour some into the lid, swirl my powder brush around to incorporate the product into the bristles and firmly pat it all over my face. I set it with a light misting of facial toner for extra staying power.

From the Lily Lolo US website: “Our award winning finishing powder is made with pure inert minerals and completely free of nano particles, talc, additives, harsh chemicals, parabens, gluten, bismuth oxychloride, synthetic dyes, fillers, fragrance, preservatives, petroleum based chemicals, and other questionable ingredients. Gluten free, suitable for vegans.” Ingredients: Mica, Iron Oxides   $22 for 4.5g in a 40ml sifter jar

2. Benecos Bio Lip Balm
I’ve tried a few natural lip balms and this is the only one I keep coming back to. It has a creamy consistency and glides on easily while depositing a good amount of product. It’s tasteless and fragrance-free. If you’re in the market for a fragrance-free balm, you might to give this one a whirl!

From the Benecos website: “This lip balm heals and restores health to lips with organic plant oils and Vitamin E. BDIH Certified Natural, Cruelty Free, Gluten-Free.” Ingredients: Olive Fruit Oil, Beeswax, Sumax Berry Peel Wax, Jojoba Seed Oil*, Shea Butter*, Carnauba Wax, Vitamin E, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Vitamin C, Sunflower Seed Oil*, Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera   $6.99 for .15 oz/4g

3. John Masters Organics Calendula Hydrating & Toning Mask
I have slightly dry skin and I’m always trying to keep it moisturized and avoid stripping it of its natural oils. Many facial masks include clay which is great for deep cleansing but can be drying. This mask is super rich and spreads over the face like a dream. It doesn’t dry to a stiff dry consistency like many masks and is easy to wipe off.

From the John Masters Organics website: “Weekly mask with powerful hydration
for dry and weather-damaged skin. Hydrates the skin with 12 oils and extracts; protects against free radical damage; helps regenerate collagen; balances production of sebum.” Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice*, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, arachidyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, arachidyl glucoside, glycerin*, populus tremuloides (aspen) bark extract, xylitylglucoside, anhydroxylitol, xylitol, maltooligosyl glucoside/hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, hydrolyzed linseed extract*, malpighia glabra (acerola) fruit extract*, oryza sativa (rice) extract*, spirulina platensis extract*, butyrospermum parkii (shea) nut butter*, olea europaea (olive) leaf extract, calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract*, rosa damascena (rose) flower oil*, cananga odorata (ylang ylang) flower oil*, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract*, sclerotium gum, xanthan gum, p-anisic acid * Certified Organic   $26 for 2 oz/57g

4. Pai Comfrey & Calendula Calming Body Cream
As many of you know, I love Pai products. They are very high quality and deliver results with a minimum number of ingredients. This lotion is rich without being greasy, absorbs well and is fragrance-free.

From the Pai website: “An intensely hydrating and therapeutic cream formulated for sensitive or allergy-prone skin. This silky, rich cream is the ultimate multi-tasker for very dry or out of condition skin. Free from alcohol, artificial fragrance, synthetic preservatives and petrochemicals.” Ingredients: aqua, helianthus annuus oil*, olea europa oil*, butyrospermum parkii butter*, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin*, simmondsia chinensis oil*, prunus domestica seed oil*, symphytum spp extract*, calendula officinalis extract*, cetearyl glucoside, echium plantagineum, mixed tocopherols, jasminum grandiflorum* oil, citrus sinensis oil*, sodium levulinate, sodium anisate, lactic acid, sodium laurel lactylate   $40 for 6.8 oz/200 ml

5. Real Purity Pure Body Soap Bar
This soap lathers really well, makes me feel clean and refreshed and is reasonably priced.

From the Real Purity website: “Seaweed and Aloe Vera Gel work together to calm and moisturize the skin. Sandalwood Oil softens and tones skin, allowing it to retain increased amounts of moisture while clearing away blemishes and scar. Grapefruit Oil brightens skin and removes toxins. Alcohol and paraben-free, this product is formulated with all natural ingredients.” Ingredients:Purified Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Gel*, Focus Vesiculosis (Seaweed), Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit Seed) Extract, Olive Leaf Extract, Vitamin E*, Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil*, Paradisi (Grapefruit) Oil*, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil*  *Organic and/or All Natural Ingredients   $8.00 for 4.5 oz

6. The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser
Makeup Artist Lisa Eldridge whom I absolutely adore mentioned this product in her Cleansing Balm Review so  I decided to give it a try. I enjoy giving myself a good facial massage at the end of the day using this product. This is probably the best mascara remover I’ve tried. When I have a full face of makeup, I lean on this product to quickly dissolve the products on my face. I remove the product with a muslin cloth soaked in very warm water or large cotton pads moistened with warm water. It’s worth noting that your face will need a separate cleansing after using this product (unlike Pai’s Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser). After I received the product, I reviewed the ingredient list on the package and found items listed at the end that weren’t on the website. Those ingredients are Parfum (essential oils), Linalool and Limonene. I was pretty annoyed to discover these ingredients but I do like how the product performs.

From the Organic Pharmacy Website “Our ultimate best selling cleanser effortlessly removes grime, dirt, dead skin and make-up including eye make-up. Infused with Rosemary, Carrot and Shea Butter, the skin is left comfortable, incredibly soft and radiant. Chamomile and Lavender soothe and calm both skin and mind. Excellent for all skin types.” Ingredients: Sunflower Oil(Helianthus Annus), Jojoba Oil(Simmondsia Chinensis)*, Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)*, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Sesame Seed Oil (Sesamum Indicum), Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao), Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)*, Marigold (Calendula Officinalis) Extract*, Carrot (Daucus Carrota) , Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europea)*, St Johns Wort (Hypericum Perforatum)*, Vitamin E (Tocopherol), Rosemary (Rosamarium Officinale), Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis), Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis)”   $74 for 70 ml

7. Real Purity Mascara
I’ve been trying out natural mascaras the past few months and this one is my favorite so far. The product is a nice consistency and doesn’t clump during application. The brush feels just right and it coats pretty well with the first application. The formula is a good balance of thickening and lengthening and it’s a nice black color. I haven’t found a natural mascara that doesn’t smudge a little under the eyes after about 5 hours but this product has pretty good staying power. It come in a great range of colors: Clear, Emerald Green, Violet, Black, Sable Brown, Navy, Black and Brown. The mascara needs a good makeup remover and the packaging is pretty basic but it’s a great product for the price.

From the Real Purity website: “All of Real Purity’s mascaras are micronized (not nano-sized) and are then coated in Pycnogenol, a premiere anti-oxidant that goes one step further to protect your eyelashes from harsh chemicals.” Ingredients: Purified Water, Beeswax, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Candellila, Cellulose, Pure Plant Extracts, Iron Oxide   $15 for .50cc

8. Pai Echium & Macadamia Replenishing Day Cream
Another winner from Pai, this moisturizer is great for day or night. The pump is convenient and the packaging is elegant. It was a tad heavy for daytime use during the summer but it will be great now that Fall is upon us.

From the Pai website: “Breakthrough organic extracts to revitalize sensitive skin as it ages. Rich in deeply replenishing actives, it absorbs beautifully to optimize both hydration and regeneration for a smooth, supple complexion. Accelerates skin cell regeneration to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Deep conditions and repairs skin at a cellular level. Anti-inflammatory properties keep sensitive skin types clear and calm.Suitable for Vegans. Not tested on animals.” Ingredients: Echium, Macademia, Rose, Aqua, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil* (Apricot Kernel Oil), Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil* (Macadamia Oil), Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil* (Thistle Oil), Cetearyl Alcohol (Coconut-derived Emulsifier), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter* (Shea Butter), Glycerin* (Vegetable Glycerine), Borago Officinalis Seed Oil* (Borage Oil), Lactobacillus Ferment (From Biotechnology), Prunus Domestica Seed Oil* (Plum Kernel Oil), Glyceryl Stearate Citrate (From Sustainable Palm Oil), Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil (Echium Extract), Sambucus Nigra Flower Extract (Black Elder Extract), Rosa Damascena Oil* (Damask Rose Otto Oil), Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Cetearyl Alcohol (Coconut-derived Emulsifier), Cetearyl Glucoside (Corn-derived Emulsifier), Sodium Anisate (Basil Extract), Glyceryl Caprylate (From Coconut Oil), Pelargonium Graveolens Oil* (Rose Geranium Oil), Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract (Rosemary Extract), Sodium Levulinate (Corn Extract), Citrus Grandis Peel Oil* (Grapefruit Peel Oil), Lactic Acid (From Sugar Beet)

,  *Certified Organic by the Soil Association   $70 for 1.7 fl oz/50 ml

Natural Beauty Favorites from July 2014

Happy August! Here are the natural beauty products I really enjoyed last month. I purchased all of these products myself. All prices shown are all retail and in USD. In some cases, I purchased the products from another retailer and/or at a discount.

Sorry about the line spacing. I just can’t get it right and I don’t want to delay this post.

Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating Clarifying Shampoo  $7.95 for 8.5 oz

This shampoo is marketed for normal to dry hair. I consider my hair “normal” but it gets dry because I color it. This is the 5th or 6th natural shampoo I’ve tried and it’s my favorite of the bunch. It cleans my hair nicely and doesn’t have a strong scent. Per the FAQ on the Giovanni website, their shampoos are just fine for color treated hair. Note: I just noticed that this product contains Phenoxyethanol which many people (including me) try to avoid. Bummer – I’ll have to rethink whether I would repurchase this shampoo.

Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water), Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Vegetable Glycerin, Panthenol, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance, *Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, *Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, *Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, *Betula Alba Extract, *Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract, *Achillea Millefolium Extract, *Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, *Equisetum Arvense Extract, *Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, *Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Extract, *Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, *Tussilago Farfara (Coltsfoot) Flower Extract, *Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract  *USDA Certified Organic

I’m in love with this funny little sponge! The Konjac potato grows in high altitudes in Asia and it makes the softest sponge imaginable. I. Pair any facial cleaner with this sponge for a super effective yet gentle exfoliation (it’s gentle enough to use on your eye area). Using this sponge at the end of the day is a must for me unless I’m using a muslin cloth or facial brush. I can’t imagine not giving this sponge a permanent home in my inventory of beauty tools. The sponge is supposed to last a minimum of 3 months.

Lily Lolo Eyelid Primer  $14.98  for .14 oz/ 4 g
Some people won’t leave home without their eyebrows on. For me, my must haves before stepping out the door are under eye corrector and eye primer. The lighter colored product evens out the entire eye area, canceling out veins and discoloration on the lid and all the way up to the browbone. If I have ample time on a workday, I’ll add a neutral eyeshadow and a slightly deeper shade in the crease. The darker shade works pretty well as an under eye corrector too.
Ingredients: WAX – KAOLIN, RICINUS COMMUNIS SEED OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, CERA ALBA, CANDELILLA CERA, ZINC STEARATE, HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, COPERNICIA CERIFERA CERA, CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE), CI 77491 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77492 (IRON OXIDE). POWDER – KAOLIN, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS SEED OIL, ZINC STEARATE, [+/- CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE), CI 77491 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77492 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77499 (IRON OXIDE)]

The pressed blush is a newly released product for Lily Lilo. I am still trying to embrace loose mineral products. I find them messy and a little tricky to use. I’ve been enjoying this blush a lot. I find the pale peachy pink color just perfect for my NW25 skin tone. The subtle sheen adds a highlighting effect on my cheekbones which is really pretty. This product is reasonably priced and the mirror inside the compact is an added bonus. This isn’t a big deal but I had to buy this product from the UK Lily Lilo website as it wasn’t offered on the US site.
Ingredients: MICA, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, ARGANIA SPINOSA (ARGAN) KERNEL OIL, PUNICA GRANATUM (POMEGRANATE) SEED OIL, LEPTOSPERMUM SCOPARIUM (MANUKA) OIL, SODIUM HYALURONATE, ERYNGIUM MARITIMUM CALLUS CULTURE FILTRATE, [+/- CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE), CI 77742 (MANGANESE VIOLET), CI 77491 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77499 (IRON OXIDE), CI 75470 (CARMINE)]

Mineral Fusion Concealer in Medium  $24.99 for .11 oz/3.1 g
The concept behind this dual-tone concealer is to allow a customized color match. I instantly fell in love with the darker product as it does a great job of correcting my dark under eye circles (my #1 beauty problem/insecurity). This product is super creamy and easy to apply with your fingers. Sometimes I blend it out with a concealer brush and layer a lighter concealer on top. I usually apply a finishing powder on top of the concealer to set it for the day.
Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Silica, Jojoba Esters, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract (Pycnogenol), Zinc Oxide, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate (Licorice Root), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos Red Tea) Leaf Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Phenoxyethanol.  May Contain (+/-): Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).

This is another product I picked up at my local Sprouts store. I’ve always been a fan of gel toothpastes and this one doesn’t disappoint. The product leaves my teeth feeling squeaky clean and it’s nice and minty without burning your mouth. The convenience of a stand up tube is an added plus in my book.
Ingredients: Glycerin, Hydrated Silica, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sorbitol, Water, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Flavor*, Sodium Bicarbonate, Bambusa Arundinacea (Bamboo) Stem Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Quillaja Saponaria (Soap Bark) Root Extract, Calcium Glycerophosphate, Bisabolol, Cellulose Gum, Stevioside (Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract), Menthol, Benzoic Acid  *Natural Flavor

thought I had found my Holy Grail natural deodorant in Zion Health’s  Clay Dry (see My First iHerb Haul Review)  until I gave this wonderful product a try! The product seems to melt into the underarm area, gliding nicely over the skin. I’ve been gravitating toward unscented deodorants for the past few years but I couldn’t resist this lovely vanilla almond smell when I checked this product out in Sprouts. I want to try a different scent next time just for fun!

Ingredients: Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Organic Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Organic Saccharomyces Ferment, Organic Fragrance*

Zulu Luxe Lipgloss in Mischief $18.15 for .17 oz/5 ml
This gloss isn’t at all sticky and it’s virtually tasteless. The container and doe foot applicator is easy to use the product is lightweight for carrying in my purse. The color is great on its own or on top of another lipstick for extra shine. The gloss comes in 12 lovely colors, many of which are in my “comfort” zone (not too dark). I can’t wait to try more and I always want one in my purse!
Ingredients: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Iron Oxides, Isopropyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Crithmum Maritimum (Sea Fennel) Extract, Mica, Bisabolol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cetyl Alcohol, Hypericum Perforatum (St. John’s Wort) Extract, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Titanium Dioxide

Zuzu Oil Free Liquid Foundation in L-11  $29.75 for 1 oz/30 ml
I color matched myself for this foundation at Whole Foods and the color is absolute perfection for my skin tone. I apply the product with my fingers, finishing it off with a buffing brush. It’s not super full coverage but it provides a more polished finish than BB cream alone. I set the foundation with finishing powder on a big fluffy brush for longevity throughout the day. This one’s a keeper.

Ingredients: Aqua (Infusion of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice), Ascorbyl Palmitate, Lecithin, Cetyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Glycerine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Silica, Kaolin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Limonene, Mica, Iron Oxides, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Titanium Dioxide.

Vacation Natural Beauty Must Haves

As I packed for our week vacation at our vacation home, I had to think seriously about what skincare and makeup products to bring along. I had some recent purchases I wanted to use, some products I’m trying to use up and some products already at the vacation home.

“Green” Products Currently at Vacation Home

Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Balancing Toner – I like this toner a lot. I’ve had this product for awhile, though, so I need to replace it with a fresh product soon.

EO Essential Oil Products Shampoo and Conditioner with Keratin Coconut and Hibiscus (mentioned in my June Favorites.)

Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Moisturizing Cleanser – I enjoy this product when I’m here on vacation. I’ve had it awhile so I need to use it up.

Tom’s of Main Deodorant in Clean Confidence – I’m interested in exploring other brands of natural deodorants but this product works just fine for me when I’m down here.

Tom’s of Main Antiplaque and Whitening Toothpaste – This product is a fine staple. Tom’s toothpaste, along with deodorant were the first green products I stashed in our vacation home more than 4 years ago.

Products I Can’t Live Without or I’m Trying to Use Up

Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum – My #1 beauty issue is hyper pigmentation. I’ve been using this product twice a day for about 2 weeks and plan to continue for at least one more month. I have 2 dark spots on my face I’m tracking to see if this product will lighten them up so we’ll see…

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Pure Castile Soap in Almond – I picked up a smaller bottle of this product during my first trip to the local Sprout’s market. I love it so much, I needed some for the vacation home so I took another trip to Sprouts before we headed out of town (also to get some self tanner). I got the version with Almond Oil to try it as a makeup brush cleaner. This product suds well and has a pleasant almond scent. I filled hand soap dispensers with this product. It’s fantastic as a hand or body wash.

Jurlique Purely Sun-Defying Face Cream – Mentioned in my June 2014 Favorites, this is a face cream with SPF that I’m trying to use up because I have new products I’m excited to try.

Mineral Fusion Concealer Duo in Warm – I love this product! One of the first must have natural cosmetics finds was under eye corrector to erase my ever persistent dark under eye circles. I’m still on the hunt for the perfect peach corrector but I think this one is going to be hard to beat.

Nature’s Baby Organics Face & Body Moisturizer – Mentioned this in my First iHerb Haul, this lotion is perfect: effective, unscented and reasonably priced.

Naturelle D’Argan Day and Night Youth Cream – Also mentioned in my June 2014 Favorites, I like this product and I’m trying to use it up because I have new products to try.

Pai Camelia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser – I can’t seem to live without this cleanser for end of day makeup removal (see my review here). I see that Pai now has travel sets now so I may need to pick one up.

Skyn Icelandic Relief Eye Cream – This is a lightweight, refreshing eye cream. It works well for daytime use as it’s not greasy and doesn’t make my eye makeup smear throughout the day. The product doesn’t really stick to your finger so you have to dig in a bit with your nail to get a substantial amount on your finger to apply which is a little bit of a pain.

Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen and Primer  – This is a great product in theory; a moisturizer, primer and SPF. I find the product leaves somewhat of a white cast on my face. I’m trying to use it up and will start using it on my neck and arms instead of my face.

Zuzu Lipgloss in Mischief – I’ve been carrying this gloss in my purse for a month or so and I like it a lot. It’s a great summer product with just enough color and shine for everyday use.

Zuzu Oil-Free Liquid Foundation in L-11– I love this foundation and it’s super easy to apply (I usually use my fingers). The color is perfect for me. When I dust finishing powder over this foundation, it lasts all day which is great.
